Servings: 1

Ingredients

  • 1 c. Lowfat milk (room temperature)
  • 1 c. Sugar
  • 1 c. REGULAR Flour (room temperature)
  • 1 c. oil
  • 1/2 c. lowfat milk
  • 3 x Large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking pwdr
  • 1 tsp cinnamon (1 to 2)
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 box instant vanilla pudding (5.1 ounce)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 c. nuts

Directions

  1. Starter:1 C. Lowfat milk, (room temperature)
  2. 1 C. Sugar1 C. REGULAR Flour, (room temperature)
  3. Note: don't use Self-Rising flour.
  4. Fold in a non-metallic bowl - glass or possibly plastic is fine
  5. Note: The metal interferes with the chemical reaction which needs to take place. Use a plastic or possibly wooden stirrer. Do not be concerned if you cannot get ALL the lumps out. Try to mix till lumps are pea sized, but with none larger than a grape. Pour into a 1 gallon freezer ziplock bag.
  6. NEVER Chill Or possibly LET METALTOUCH THE HERMAN BABY!
  7. The cool retards the action and the flavor is not as "full".
  8. Note: The finished Sponge will expand to over 2 to 3 times its original volume. Let starter sit in a quiet place, away from drafts or possibly warm breezes.
  9. Attach the following Instructions to the starter which you share:
  10. Day 1: Congratulations on receiving your own Herman baby!
  11. NEVER Chill Or possibly LET METAL TOUCH THE HERMAN BABY!
  12. The cool retards the action and the flavor is not as "full".
  13. Day 2: Squeeze Herman
  14. Day 3: Squeeze Herman
  15. Day 4: Squeeze Herman

  20. Day 9: Squeeze Herman
  21. Day 10: Put Herman in a large glass bowl. Add in 1 c. flour, 1 c. sugar and 1 c. lowfat milk. Stir with a wooden spoon. Take out 3 c. and place 1 c. each into three separate plastic freezer bags. Give one bag and a copy of Herman's care and feeding instructions to three friends.
  22. To the remaining Herman (a little over one c.) , add in the following ingredients and mix well.
  23. 1 c. oil1/2 c. milk3 eggs1 teaspoon vanilla
  24. In a separate bowl combine the following dry ingredients and mix well:
  25. 2 c. flour1 c. sugar1-1/2 teaspoon baking powder1 or possibly 2 teaspoon cinnamon1/2 teaspoon baking soda1 box instant vanilla pudding, (5.1 ounce)
  26. 1/2 teaspoon salt1 c. nuts
  27. Add in dry ingredients to wet ingredients. Mix and pour into two well greased and sugared bread pans. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour.
  28. NOTES : Got this from another list and thought it was cute. I've seen another, but it has baking pwdr and baking soda in it. The real Friendship bread is made with a sponge, and no yeast. The point is to share the sponge amongst one's friends - ergo Friendship bread. There are several versions circulating, but I thought this one was kind of cute. It's the only one I've seen which has included the instructions for "Herman."
