,%20descended%20last%20Sunday.%20But%20the%20losses%20and%20devastation%20Sandy%20left%20in%20her%20wake%20gave%20me%20an%20injection%20of%20fresh%20perspective%20--%20while%20sigh-worthy,%20the%20lack%20of%20fresh%20veggies%20pales%20in%20comparison%20to%20losing%20a%20home,%20a%20car,%20or%20even%20just%20electricity%20for%20more%20than%20a%20couple%20of%20days.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20were%20extremely%20fortunate%20--%20barely%20even%20lost%20power%20and%20all%20the%20trees%20that%20might%20have%20fallen%20at%20our%20house%20had%20been%20taken%20down%20already.%20I%20am%20hoping%20for%20a%20speedy%20recovery%20for%20the%20millions%20who%20got%20walloped.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMeanwhile,%20that%20final%20CSA%20box%20left%20us%20with%20five%20pounds%20of%20truly%20gorgeous%20scarlet%20turnips%20%20that%20I%20was%20not%20sure%20what%20to%20do%20with...%20Scarlets%20are%20a%20mildly%20sweet%20variety%20of%20turnip%20that%20I'd%20never%20encountered%20before.%20So%20I%20turned%20to%20my%20favorite%20recipe%20resource,%20Food%20Blog%20Search%20and%20turned%20up%20this%20whimsically%20named%20recipe%20for%20a%20turnip%20%22puff.%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20ingredients%20looked%20appealing%20to%20me%20-%20I%20like%20the%20idea%20of%20adding%20brown%20sugar%20and%20nutmeg%20to%20play%20up%20the%20turnips'%20natural%20sweetness.%20And%20I%20certainly%20won't%20say%20no%20to%20anything%20that%20is%20topped%20with%20buttered%20breadcrumbs...%20It%20also%20looked%20pretty%20easy%20so%20I%20gave%20it%20a%20whirl.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20made%20a%20few%20small%20changes%20to%20Kitchen%20Parade's%20recipe,%20namely%20that%20I%20boiled%20the%20turnips%20with%20a%20potato%20since%20I'd%20read%20that%20this%20can%20help%20to%20remove%20any%20bitterness%20-%20then%20I%20mashed%20the%20potato%20along%20with%20the%20turnips%20(why%20not,%20right?)%20I%20also%20added%20a%20pinch%20of%20cinnamon%20and%20cloves%20to%20go%20along%20with%20the%20nutmeg.%20And%20after%20roughly%20mashing%20the%20turnips%20and%20potato,%20I%20added%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20ingredients%20and%20just%20used%20my%20immersion%20blender%20to%20blend%20it%20all%20together.%20The%20end%20result%20was%20nice%20-%20a%20hearty%20baked%20turnip%20mash%20that%20is%20mildly%20sweet%20and%20mildly%20spiced.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETurnip%20Puff%20(recipe%20via%20Kitchen%20Parade)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServes%204%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20Preheat%20oven%20to%20375%20degrees%20and%20bring%20a%20medium%20sized%20pot%20of%20salted%20water%20to%20a%20boil.%20Peel%20the%20turnips%20or%20rutabagas%20and%20cut%20into%20roughly%20equal-size%20quarters%20and%20cook%20at%20a%20gentle%20boil%20until%20soft.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20Mash%20the%20turnips%20or%20rutabagas%20in%20a%20large%20bowl%20-%20you%20can%20do%20this%20by%20hand,%20with%20an%20immersion%20blender%20or%20in%20a%20food%20processor.%20Add%20the%20eggs,%20butter,%20flour,%20brown%20sugar,%20baking%20powder,%20salt,%20pepper%20and%20nutmeg%20and%20combine%20well.%20Transfer%20to%20a%20buttered%20casserole%20dish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3.%20Combine%20the%20crumbs%20and%20butter%20and%20sprinkle%20evenly%20on%20top%20and%20bake%20until%20lightly%20browned%20on%20top,%20about%2035-40%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWant%20even%20more%20recipes,%20photos,%20giveaways,%20and%20food-related%20inspiration?%20%22Like%22%20the%20Garden%20of%20Eating%20on%20Facebook%20or%20follow%20me%20on%20Twitter.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
