%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDecember%2030,%202013%20by%20Becca%20John%209%20Comments%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20know%20it%E2%80%99s%20incredibly%20unusual%20for%20me%20to%20post%20two%20sweet%20recipes%20in%20one%20month,%20let%20alone%20two%20in%20a%20row,%20but%20it%20pretty%20much%20represents%20the%20way%20I%20eat%20at%20this%20time%20of%20year.%20January%20to%20November,%20I%E2%80%99ll%20probably%20eat%20dessert%20no%20more%20than%20once%20or%20twice%20a%20month,%20but%20come%20December,%20every%20meal%20must%20be%20followed%20by%20some%20sort%20of%20sweet,%20and%20then%20between%20each%20meal%20there%E2%80%99s%20plenty%20of%20chocolate%20%20-%20so%20I%E2%80%99m%20making%20the%20most%20of%20it%20before%20January%20swings%20round%20once%20again.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20German%20Krummeltorte%20might%20sound%20fancy,%20but%20it%E2%80%99s%20actually%20ridiculously%20easy%20%E2%80%93%20so%20much%20so%20that%20you%20need%20pretty%20much%20no%20baking%20ability%20whatsoever.%20It%E2%80%99s%20sort%20of%20an%20apple%20crumble%20/%20apple%20pie%20/%20apple%20cake%20hybrid,%20consisting%20of%20a%20layer%20of%20cake%20at%20the%20bottom,%20then%20a%20layer%20of%20spiced%20apples,%20and%20finished%20off%20with%20a%20crumbly%20streusel-like%20topping.%20The%20simplicity%20of%20this%20recipe%20becomes%20apparent%20when%20you%20realise%20that%20the%20recipe%20for%20the%20cakey%20bottom%20layer%20is%20actually%20identical%20to%20the%20crumble%20topping%20%E2%80%93%20how%20it%20works,%20I%20have%20no%20idea,%20but%20somehow%20it%20transforms%20into%20two%20different%20things%20as%20it%20cooks.%20Must%20be%20some%20sort%20of%20magic.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20actually%20take%20full%20(or%20any)%20credit%20for%20this%20recipe,%20since%20it%E2%80%99s%20actually%20one%20of%20my%20late%20Granny%E2%80%99s%20recipes%20from%20her%20hand-written%20recipe%20book%20that%20we%20discovered%20a%20while%20back%20%E2%80%93%20aren%E2%80%99t%20those%20the%20best?%20You%20know%20a%20recipe%20is%20special%20when%20someone%20has%20taken%20the%20time%20to%20write%20it%20out%20by%20hand%20into%20their%20personal%20recipe%20book.%20My%20Granny%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20even%20remotely%20German%20(she%20was%20Welsh,%20actually),%20and%20I%20have%20no%20idea%20where%20she%20got%20this%20recipe%20from%20originally%20(probably%20an%20old%20cookbook%20or%20one%20of%20her%20friends),%20so%20I%E2%80%99ll%20just%20credit%20it%20to%20her.%20She%20was%20an%20amazing%20cook.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20best%20thing%20about%20this%20cake%20is%20how%20versatile%20it%20is%20%E2%80%93%20if%20you%20let%20it%20cool,%20you%20can%20serve%20it%20as%20a%20teatime%20snack%20with%20a%20cup%20of%20tea,%20or%20if%20you%20serve%20it%20while%20it%E2%80%99s%20warm%20with%20a%20drizzle%20of%20cream,%20it%E2%80%99s%20more%20of%20an%20apple%20crumble-like%20dessert.%20It%20will%20happily%20keep%20for%20a%20few%20days,%20so%20you%20can%20even%20do%20both!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGerman%20Krummeltorte%20(apple%20crumble%20cake)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAuthor:%20Becca%20@%20Amuse%20Your%20Bouche%E2%80%99s%20Granny%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERecipe%20type:%20Dessert%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServes:%208%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EInstructions%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20the%20oven%20to%20190%C2%B0C%20(Gas%20Mark%205%20/%20375%C2%B0F).%20Line%20and%20lightly%20grease%20a%20spring-form%20cake%20tin%20measuring%20around%209%20inches.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPeel%20and%20core%20the%20apples,%20and%20cut%20them%20into%20chunks%20or%20slices.%20Add%20them%20to%20a%20pan%20with%20the%20cinnamon%20and%20a%20third%20of%20the%20granulated%20sugar,%20and%20cook%20over%20a%20low%20heat%20for%205%20minutes%20until%20nearly%20soft.%20Set%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERub%20the%20butter%20and%20the%20flour%20together,%20then%20add%20the%20remaining%20granulated%20sugar%20and%20egg,%20and%20mix%20well%20with%20a%20fork%20to%20form%20a%20breadcrumb-like%20mixture.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPress%20two-thirds%20of%20the%20cake%20mixture%20into%20the%20cake%20tin,%20and%20add%20the%20stewed%20apples%20in%20a%20slightly%20rounded%20heap,%20leaving%20a%20small%20gap%20around%20the%20edge.%20Then%20sprinkle%20the%20remaining%20cake%20mixture%20around%20the%20sides%20and%20over%20the%20top%20of%20the%20apples.%20Top%20with%20a%20couple%20of%20tablespoons%20of%20demerara%20sugar.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBake%20for%20around%2040%20minutes,%20or%20until%20golden%20brown.%20To%20serve%20warm,%20leave%20to%20stand%20for%20a%20few%20minutes,%20and%20then%20release%20from%20the%20spring-form%20pan.%20To%20serve%20cold,%20leave%20it%20to%20cool%20in%20the%20tin%20and%20then%20remove%20and%20slice.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3.2.2265%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMore%20apple%20recipes:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EApple%20and%20goat%E2%80%99s%20cheese%20dauphinoise%20potatoes%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EApple,%20parsnip%20and%20potato%20soup%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhipped%20caramel%20apple%20pie%20dip%20from%20Wanna%20Be%20A%20Country%20Cleaver%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EApple%20cinnamon%20roll%20muffins%20from%20Cooking%20Classy%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EApple%20and%20poppy%20seed%20coleslaw%20fro
