About me
I am a full-time school teacher who is looking to work ing the food industry in about 8 years when I retire from teaching. I am at this time completely self-taught, but would love to train under a local chef during the summer sometime. I love to take old family recipes and update them to either add more flavor or make them more healthful for me to eat, as I am in need of lower fat dietary choices! I also love to tweak recipes to meet the needs of my best friend who is allergic to soy and gluten. Yes, I love cooking and I love eating and I love to feed people I care about.
Cooking Influences
The Frugal Gourmet- Jeff Smith- was my first real inspiration. I own two of his cookbooks and I love them. I also loved Justin Wilson and Martin Yan, but I never tried to cook like them. More modern influences are just about any of the food network chefs, especially Racheal Ray, Paula Deen, and Tyler Florence. I love to watch Bobby Flay but I am not into the same flavor profiles he uses. I do learn a lot of methodology from him. Ina Garten is also special in that I learned how to cook brussel sprouts from watching her. Giada De Laurentiis is very special also, but I have not dared to try her recipes yet. Sandra Lee's new show is great as well. I have changed some of my routine shopping and food prep habits because of her show.
My other main cooking influence is "What will my family eat?" Answering this question has a LOT to do with what I actually end up attempting to cook.
Recommendations
Restaurants I Recommend
- Blue Talon Bistro (Williamsburg, VA)
- awesome and wonderful variety of food and a great online cookbook. I have only attempted the meatloaf, but I have learned to do it fairly well. I had to improvise on the sauce, though, and haven't managed it quite yet!
- Provino's (Chattanooga, TN)
- I know it is a chain, per se, but it has special sentimental value to me as it is the home of our local quizbowl team's celebrations and regular gatherings. They make me feel like I am home every time I go there. I love the veal marsala and the seafood trio in rosatella sauce the best. The garlic rolls are to DIE for, though!!!
- Captain George's Seafood Buffet (Williamsburg, VA)
- If you love seafood the way I do, you MUST eat here. YUM!
