.%20Cocktail%20umbrellas%20were%20a%20must.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20go%20with%20our%20cocktails,%20Roger%20and%20Mary%20made%20a%20platter%20of%20jerk%20chicken%20bites%20on%20pieces%20of%20fried%20plantain.%20The%20jerk%20marinade%20had%20been%20reduced%20to%20a%20thick%20sauce%20and%20added%20extra%20heat%20for%20those%20who%20wanted%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20also%20had%20jerk%20pork%20(just%20called%20%E2%80%9COink!%E2%80%9D)%20made%20by%20Georgiann.%20These%20were%20marinated%20overnight,%20skewered%20with%20pieces%20of%20bell%20pepper,%20broiled%20and%20served%20with%20a%20mild%20mango%20dipping%20sauce.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEventually%20we%20proceeded%20to%20the%20table%20and%20had%20bowls%20of%20squash%20and%20corn%20soup%20from%20Linda.%20A%20slight%20mixup%20between%20varieties%20of%20cayenne%20meant%20the%20soup%20was%20a%20little%20beyond%20perky,%20which%20created%20a%20lot%20of%20red%20faces,%20but%20it%20was%20delicious.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJon%20and%20I%20made%20crab%20sliders,%20from%20Marcus%20Samuelsson%E2%80%99s%20book%20The%20Soul%20of%20a%20New%20Cuisine.%20I%20baked%20sweet%20potato%20dinner%20rolls,%20which%20were%20topped%20with%20a%20mixture%20of%20Dungeness%20crab,%20black%20beans,%20jalapenos%20and%20cilantro,%20then%20adorned%20with%20pickled%20cabbage,%20chile%20mayonnaise%20and%20rum-pickled%20habaneros%20and%20jalapenos.%20The%20pickled%20chiles%20were%20pretty%20awesome,%20but%20I%20forgot%20to%20take%20a%20picture%20of%20them%20before%20they%20were%20gone.%20We%20did%20save%20the%20pickling%20liquid,%20though,%20and%20packed%20it%20with%20onion%20slices%20to%20use%20later.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJenise%20made%20two%20astonishing%20dishes,%20one%20with%20eggplant%20and%20one%20with%20shrimp,%20which%20went%20splendidly%20together%20(I%20really%20don%E2%80%99t%20know%20what%20was%20in%20either%20of%20them).%20The%20crowning%20glory%20was%20the%20sprinkle%20of%20deep%20fried%20pickled%20ginger%20on%20top.%20So,%20so%20good.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20go%20alongside%20there%20was%20a%20Haitian%20slaw%20from%20Mike,%20which%20was%20bright%20and%20cooling%20after%20all%20the%20spice.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20to%20finish,%20Roger%20and%20Mary%20presented%20little%20pavlovas%20topped%20with%20banana,%20mango%20and%20kiwi.%20I%20love%20meringue,%20so%20I%20was%20all%20over%20this.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMany%20beverages%20were%20drunk.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHemingway%20Daiquiri%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECombine%20the%20rum,%20maraschino%20and%20fruit%20juices%20in%20a%20shaker%20with%20ice%20and%20shake%20well.%20Strain%20into%20a%20cocktail%20glass%20(or%20a%20rocks%20glass%20if%20you%20like)%20and%20garnish%20with%20a%20lime%20wheel%20and%20a%20cherry.%20Drink%20on%20a%20sunny%20deck%20on%20a%20warm%20evening.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20Loading...%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
