,%20so%20this%20will%20be%20my%20second%20time%20there.%20I%E2%80%99m%20tremendously%20grateful%20that%20this%20year%E2%80%99s%20group%20is%20taking%20me%20back,%20because%20I%20have%20a%20loose%20end%20to%20tie%20up:%20I%20have%20to%20climb%20Il%20Duomo.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%E2%80%99m%20extremely%20claustrophobic.%20And%20scared%20of%20heights.%20And%20scared%20of%20planes,%20spiders,%20boats%20.%20.%20.%20you%20get%20the%20idea.%20I%E2%80%99m%20afraid%20of%20everything.%20But%20particularly%20relevant%20to%20this%20story%20is%20the%20fact%20that%20I%E2%80%99m%20claustrophobic.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20didn%E2%80%99t%20realize%20before%20our%20trip%20last%20year%20that%20there%20were%20so%20many%20climbable,%20tight%20spaces%20in%20Europe:%20bell%20towers,%20cathedral%20domes,%20castles.%20Modern%20buildings%20have%20wide%20passageways,%20thoughtfully%20constructed%20staircases,%20flippin%E2%80%99%20elevators.%20But%20these%20buildings%20were%20built%20when%20architecture%20was%20first%20being%20worked%20out%20%E2%80%94%20when%20domes%20regularly%20collapsed,%20when%20being%20the%20architect%20of%20a%20building%20meant%20designing%20your%20own%20machines%20to%20haul%20stones%20to%20the%20tops%20of%20towers,%20when%20no%20one%20had%20ever%20tried%20what%20you%20were%20trying.%20The%20Florence%20Cathedral%20is%20one%20of%20these%20buildings.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIl%20Duomo,%20as%20it%E2%80%99s%20called,%20has%20the%20largest%20masonry%20dome%20in%20the%20world.%20Its%20construction%20was%20planned%20and%20supervised%20by%20Filippo%20Brunelleschi,%20who%20convinced%20the%20guild%20in%20charge%20that%20he%20knew%20what%20he%20was%20doing%20in%20spite%20of%20the%20fact%20that%20no%20one%20had%20ever%20done%20anything%20like%20it%20before.%20Visitors%20can%20now%20climb%20up%20into%20his%20masterpiece%20using%20a%20series%20of%20twisting,%20claustrophobic%20passageways%20with%20extremely%20limited%20headspace%20and%20only%20pocket-sized%20window%20here%20and%20there.%20When%20my%20students%20and%20I%20arrived%20at%20Il%20Duomo%20last%20year,%20I%E2%80%99d%20just%20finished%20bravely%20talking%20myself%20up%20the%20dome%20of%20St.%20Peter%E2%80%99s%20Basilica%20in%20Rome,%20where%20at%20one%20point%20you%20are%20literally%20on%20a%20%E2%80%9Cstaircase%E2%80%9D%20so%20narrow%20that%20you%20have%20to%20turn%20sideways%20and%20hold%20onto%20a%20center%20rope%20instead%20of%20any%20kind%20of%20banister.%20A%20ROPE.%20So%20I%20was%20feeling%20like%20a%20superhero%20and%20also%20like%20I%20never%20wanted%20to%20see%20a%20dome%20again.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20here%20we%20were%20in%20front%20of%20breathtaking%20Il%20Duomo.%20We%20were%20the%20first%20group%20there,%20so%20it%20was%20empty.%20It%20was%20a%20lovely%20day%20and%20all%20my%20students%20were%20being%20sweet%20and%20supportive.%20I%20mustered%20my%20courage%20and%20decided%20I%E2%80%99d%20give%20it%20a%20shot.%20I%20made%20it%20five%20steps.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThat%20was%20when%20I%20saw%20one%20of%20the%20pocket%20windows.%20A%20tiny%20tunnel,%20no%20wider%20than%20my%20hand,%20through%20over%20a%20foot%20of%20masonry.%20How%20much%20oxygen%20could%20that%20possibly%20allow%20into%20the%20passage?%20I%20vividly%20imagined%20myself%20suffocating%20and%20having%20a%20heart%20attack%20simultaneously,%20stuck%20up%20in%20the%20dome%20where%20no%20emergency%20crew%20could%20reach%20me.%20With%20that%20thought,%20I%20turned%20right%20back%20around,%20deciding%20to%20wait%20for%20my%20group%20on%20solid%20ground.%20No%20more%20than%2015%20minutes%20later%20I%20witnessed%20a%20woman%20exit%20the%20stairwell%20having%20a%20full-blown%20panic%20attack,%20which%20confirmed%20that%20I%E2%80%99d%20made%20the%20right%20decision.%20However,%20the%20inside%20of%20the%20cathedral%20was%20one%20of%20the%20most%20compelling%20things%20I%E2%80%99d%20ever%20seen.%20The%20wind%20rushed%20through%20like%20the%20sound%20of%20a%20waterfall%20or%20God%E2%80%99s%20voice.%20I%20stood%20below%20the%20dome,%20hundreds%20of%20feet%20below,%20wrapped%20in%20the%20sound%20and%20staring%20up%20at%20the%20centuries-old%20fresco%20of%20the%20Last%20Judgment.%20I%20felt%20my%20first%20tinge%20of%20regret.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20I%20got%20home,%20I%20read%20Ross%20King%E2%80%99s%20book,%20Brunelleschi%E2%80%99s%20Dome,%20about%20Brunelleschi%E2%80%99s%20architectural%20accomplishment.%20I%20traced%20the%20sketches%20of%20herringbone%20brickwork%20with%20my%20fingers,%20wondering%20what%20they%20looked%20like%20in%20person,%20and%20my%20regret%20grew:%20would%20I%20ever%20get%20another%20chance%20to%20climb%20the%20dome?%20What%20if%20I%20missed%20out%20on%20a%20once-in-a-lifetime%20opportunity?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20guess%20you%E2%80%99re%20starting%20to%20understand%20why%20I%20was%20so%20thrilled%20when%20my%20current%20students%20decided%20they%20wanted%20to%20see%20Florence.%20How%20often%20do%20you%20get%20a%20second%20chance%20like%20that?%20I%20have%20to%20climb%20that%20dome.%20Lying%20in%20bed%20the%20other%20night%20I%2
