%20cooking%20anything%20for%20them.%20Finally,%20a%20week%20later%20I%20am%20on%20the%20mend%20and%20back%20at%20the%20stove%20and%20also%20back%20at%20my%20writing.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt's%20been%20cold%20and%20rainy%20here%20in%20Sonoma,%20Winter%20weather%20that%20calls%20for%20comfort%20food,%20hot%20chocolate,%20pudding,%20cinnamon%20rolls...%20root%20vegetables?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20a%20kid,%20my%20mother%20wasn't%20big%20on%20the%20whole%20root%20vegetable%20thing.%20Sure,%20she%20did%20carrots%20and%20potatoes%20and%20yams%20at%20Easter,%20but%20%20it%20sort%20of%20stopped%20there.%20Parsnips,%20rutabagas,%20turnips%20were%20and%20still%20are%20unknown%20at%20my%20parents'%20house.%20Of%20course%20as%20soon%20as%20I%20was%20out%20on%20my%20own,%20I%20started%20buying%20and%20cooking%20these%20veggies%20that%20before%20had%20only%20been%20familiar%20as%20something%20someone%20took%20out%20of%20Farmer%20Mc%20Gregors'%20Garden%20at%20the%20risk%20of%20an%20ass%20full%20of%20buckshot.%20I%20wanted%20to%20illustrate%20this%20with%20a%20picture%20of%20Peter%20and%20turnips%20but%20all%20Lord%20Google%20would%20give%20me%20was%20pictures%20of%20rabbit%20with%20a%20side%20of%20turnips...%20yum.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnyway,%20I%20love%20all%20root%20vegetables,%20and%20this%20time%20of%20year%20they%20are%20cheap%20cheap%20cheap.%20I%20noticed%20that%20our%20local%20farm%20was%20selling%20all%20root%20vegetables%20for%2099%20cents%20a%20pound%20so%20of%20course%20unable%20to%20resist%20a%20bargain,%20I%20stocked%20up.%20Another%20good%20thing%20about%20root%20vegetables%20is%20that%20stored%20properly,%20they%20keep.%20So%20today%20I%20started%20working%20my%20way%20though%20my%20vegetable%20storehouse%20and%20I%20chose%20turnips.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%20are%20many%20Indian%20recipes%20for%20root%20vegetables%20from%20cooking%20them%20in%20yogurt%20sauces%20to%20making%20a%20crispy%20poriyal.%20I%20decided%20to%20make%20a%20Turnip%20Masala.%20This%20is%20a%20simple%20spicy%20dish%20that%20perfectly%20sets%20off%20the%20semi-sweet%20flavor%20of%20the%20turnips%20with%20a%20whole%20and%20ground%20masala%20mix.%20It's%20great%20as%20a%20side%20dish%20with%20meat%20or%20it%20stands%20alone%20on%20a%20Meatless%20Monday%20served%20with%20rice%20and%20chapatti.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETurnip%20Masala%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere's%20what%20to%20do.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPeel%20and%20dice%201%20lb%20of%20fresh%20turnips.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESaute%20them%20in%20a%20khadi%20or%20skillet%20%20with%201%20TBs%20of%20%20vegetable%20oil%20until%20they%20are%20lightly%20browned.%20Set%20them%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMix%20the%20Ground%20Masala:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20small%20skillet%20dry%20roast:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20it's%20nice%20and%20toasty%20put%20it%20into%20a%20spice%20grinder%20and%20turn%20it%20into%20powder%20set%20it%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMix%20the%20Ginger%20Shallot%20Paste:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20food%20processor%20or%20blender%20mix%20a%201%20inch%20piece%20of%20fresh%20ginger%20with%201%20whole%20shallot.%20Blend%20with%20a%20bit%20of%20water%20until%20you%20have%20a%20paste.%20Set%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFinely%20chop%201%20onion,%20%20and%20set%20it%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPrepare%20a%20Whole%20Garam%20Masala:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20small%20bowl%20mix%20together:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20stick%20of%20cinnamon%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ea%20few%20curry%20leaves%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E4%20whole%20cloves%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3%20whole%20cardamom%20pods%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20bay%20leaf%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChop%20finely%202%20or%203%20small%20tomatoes%20or%201%20small%20can%20of%20diced%20tomato.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPutting%20It%20All%20Together:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20deep%20skillet%20or%20kadhai,%20heat%201%20Tbs%20of%20vegetable%20oil.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20the%20oil%20is%20hot%20add%20in%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3/4%20tsp%20of%20brown%20mustard%20seed%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eand%20the%20whole%20garam%20masala%20mixture%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20this%20starts%20to%20sizzle%20and%20the%20spices%20swell%20up,%20toss%20in%20the%20chopped%20onion%20and%20saute%20til%20it%20turns%20translucent.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow%20add%20in%20the%20ginger-shallot%20paste%20and%20the%20tomatoes%20then%20cover%20the%20pan%20and%20cook%20until%20the%20tomatoes%20are%20nice%20and%20soft.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow%20add%20in%20the%20Ground%20Masala%20Mix...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E...along%20with%201/2%20tsp%20of%20turmeric%20and%201%20tsp%20of%20salt.%20Stir%20it%20around%20well,%20then%20pour%20in%20your%20pre-cooked%20turnips.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELet%20the%20mixture%20simmer%20on%20a%20low%20heat%20in%20a%20covered%20pan%20for%20about%207%20minutes.%20Check%20the%20seasoning,%20garnish%20with%20%20some%20chopped%20fresh%20cilantro%20and%20serve.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow%20these%20are%20some%20turnips%20worth%20an%20ass%20full%20of%20buckshot!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20a%20great%20make-ahead%20dish%20as%20the%20pieces%20can%20just%20be%20stored%20and%20then%20combined%20right%20at%20the%20time%20you%20are%20cooking.%20Another%20cool%20thing,%20if%20turnips%20are%20not%20tops%20at%20your%20house,%20try%20this%20same%20masala%20sauce%20with%20potatoes%20or%20rutubagas,%20it%20works%20great%20with%20either.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20want%20to%20say%20here%20that%20I'm%20glad%20to%20be%20back%20cooking%20and%20writing%20again%20and%20to%20have%20had%20the%20support%20of%20all%20my%20friends%20in%20the%20food%20community%20in%20this%20last%20difficult%20week.%20Thanks%20to%20you,%20I%20am%20now%20cooking%20on%20all%20burners.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
