  1. Dissolve yeast in 1/4 c. hot water; stir in sugar, salt and shortening.
  2. Add in 2 1/4 c. hot water and 3 1/2 c. flour and beat till smooth. Mix sufficient flour to make dough easy to handle and turn onto a floured board.
  3. Knead about 10 min till elastic. Place in greased bowl and turn over, greased side up. Cover and place in hot place, about 1 hour.
  4. Punch down and divide in half. Roll into rectangle, 18x9-inches and roll up beginning at short side, with side of hand to seal. Mix in under loaf and place in pan seam side down. Cover and let rise till double. Place on low rack in oven so which top of bread is in center of oven. Bake till dark golden: brush top with melted butter.
