Old Fashioned Apple Dumplings Recipe

  1. Pare and core apples. Leave in halves. To make pastry, sift flour, baking pwdr and salt together. Cut in shortening till particles are about the size of small peas. Sprinkle lowfat milk over mix and press together lightly, working dough only sufficient to hold together. Roll dough as for pastry and cut into 12 squares and place half an apple on each. Fill cavity in apple with sugar and cinnamon. Pat dough around apple to cover it completely.
  2. Fasten edges securely on top of apple. Place dumplings 1-inch apart in a greased baking pan. Pour over them the sauce made as follows:
  3. Combine brown sugar, water and spices. Cook for 5 min, remove from heat and add in butter. Bake at 375 degrees for 35-40 min. Baste occasionally during baking. Serve warm with rich lowfat milk or possibly ice cream.
