%20ancestors.%20I%20knew%20they'd%20come%20here%20in%201849%20looking%20for%20gold%20but%20I%20never%20knew%20from%20where%20they'd%20come.%20That%20was%20the%20shocker.%20Turns%20out%20they%20didn't%20come%20from%20France%20(in%20the%20case%20of%20my%20great%20great%20great%20grandfather)%20in%201849.%20They%20were%20already%20here%20having%20immigrated%20to%20the%20US%20back%20in%201832.%20Great%20great%20great%20grandpa%20Jean%20had%20come%20to%20California%20from%20New%20Orleans,%20where%20he'd%20been%20brought%20as%20a%202%20year%20old%20infant.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThat%20explained%20soooo%20much.%20The%20French%20name%20of%20course%20I%20knew,%20but%20my%20family%20evidently%20has%20a%20rich%20old%20history%20in%20New%20Orleans%20and%20were%20quite%20prominent%20in%20the%20civic%20life%20of%20the%20city%20way%20back%20in%20the%201840's%20and%20'50's.%20The%20family's%20houses%20still%20stand%20on%20the%20historic%20register%20in%20the%20Treme%20district%20on%20the%20Bayou%20Road.%20So%20that%20explains%20the%20Hoppin'%20John%20and%20the%20reason%20there%20are%20some%20quirky%20French%20customs%20in%20this%20family%20of%20Gold%20Rush%20pioneers%20and%20my%20insane%20love%20for%20black%20eyed%20peas.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20I%20started%20cooking%20Indian%20food%20eons%20ago%20I%20found%20%20to%20my%20delight%20a%20lot%20of%20recipes%20that%20called%20for%20the%20black%20eyed%20pea%20and%20I%20cooked%20then%20often.%20When%20we%20made%20Sonoma%20our%20main%20base%20of%20operations%20a%20few%20years%20ago,%20I%20was%20shocked%20to%20discover%20that%20I'd%20lost%20my%20black%20eyed%20peas!%20In%20LA%20I%20could%20get%20them%20almost%20anywhere.%20Here,%20not%20so%20much.%20Usually%20it%20involved%20a%20trek%20to%20the%20Indian%20market%20in%20Cotati%20and%20even%20that%20was%20a%20crap%20shoot.%20I%20couldn't%20find%20them%20in%20a%20can,%20I%20couldn't%20find%20them%20in%20a%20bin,%20I%20couldn't%20find%20them%20in%20a%20freezer...and%20before%20I%20%20go%20all%20Cat%20In%20The%20Hat%20on%20you%20about%20where%20they%20weren't,%20this%20week%20I%20discovered%20where%20they%20were.%20Whole%20Foods%20started%20carrying%20them.%20It%20turns%20out%20that%20%20a%20company%20called%20Stahlbush%20Island%20Farms%20sells%20them%20organically,%20non-GMO%20frozen!%20I%20was%20over%20the%20moon!%20Finally!%20Okay,%20so%20I'm%20not%20soaking%20them%20myself,%20but%20short%20of%20that,%20these%20are%20tasty%20little%20devils%20which%20hold%20up%20well%20in%20the%20freezing%20process%20and%20have%20the%20added%20advantage%20of%20being%20right%20at%20hand%20whenever%20a%20black%20eyed%20pea%20craving%20hits.%20Which%20it%20did.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20of%20my%20favorite%20Indian%20dishes%20is%20Lobhla%20aur%20Khumbi%20or%20black%20eyed%20peas%20with%20tomato%20and%20mushrooms.%20The%20best%20part%20of%20this%20recipe%20is%20how%20fast,%20fast,%20fast%20it%20cooks%20up%20if%20one%20is%20using%20those%20darling%20little%20frozen%20black%20eyed%20beauties.%20This%20goes%20from%20stove%20to%20table%20in%20about%20half%20an%20hour.%20The%20peas%20are%20a%20great%20source%20of%20protein%20and%20fiber%20and%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20ingredients%20cheep%20cheep%20cheep%20like%20a%20birdie.%20And%20speaking%20of%20birdies,%20it's%20vegetarian%20and%20vegan%20and%20gluten%20free.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIndian%20Style%20Black%20Eyed%20Peas%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere's%20how%20to%20do%20it:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDefrost%20a%201%20lb%20bag%20of%20frozen%20black%20eyed%20peas%20or%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20using%20%20dried%20ones%20put%201%20and%203/4%20cup%20of%20the%20dried%20peas%20in%205%20cups%20of%20water,%20bring%20it%20to%20a%20boil%20and%20then%20simmer%20it%20for%202%20minutes.%20Turn%20off%20the%20heat%20and%20let%20them%20soak%20for%201%20hour.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20%20a%20large%20skillet%20or%20kadhai,%20heat%202%20Tbs%20of%20vegetable%20oil.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20the%20oil%20is%20hot%20add%20in%20:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20tsp%20of%20cumin%20seeds%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20cinnamon%20stick%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELet%20it%20saute%20for%20a%20few%20seconds%20and%20then%20add%20in:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20and%201/2%20chopped%20onion%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2%20large%20chopped%20shallots%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStir%20everything%20around%20and%20cook%20until%20the%20onions%20start%20to%20brown%20lightl.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20in%208%20oz%20of%20fresh%20mushrooms%20and%20cook%20them%20down%20until%20they%20start%20to%20soften.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20in:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStir%20everything%20together%20then%20cover%20and%20let%20it%20all%20simmer%20for%20about%2010%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20this%20is%20going%20on%20if%20using%20dried%20peas,%20bring%20them%20to%20a%20boil%20again%20and%20let%20them%20simmer%20again%20for%2020%20to%2030%20minutes.%20After%20that,%20add%20in%20the%20mushroom%20spice%20and%20tomato%20mixture%20and%20simmer%20the%20pan%20uncovered%20on%20a%20low%20heat%20for%2030%20minutes%20more.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20using%20frozen%20or%20canned%20black%20eyed%20peas,%20add%20them%20after%20the%20ten%20minutes%20are%20up%20and%20let%20them%20cook%20through%20until%20warm%20and%20tender...about%205%20minutes%20or%20so.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20you%20can%20see,%20the%20recipe%20is%20done%20so%20much%20more%20quickly%20if%20you%20have%20access%20to%20either%20frozen%20or%20canned%20black%20eyed%20peas.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESprinkle%20with%203%20Tbs%20of%20chopped%20%20fresh%20cilantro%20%20and%20serve%20it%20up!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServed%20with%20some%20fresh%20warm%20chapattis,%20fresh%20apricots%20and%20a%20glass%20of%20cold%20Mugicha%20it's%20a%20hearty%20satisfying%20lunch.%20Add%20in%20another%20vegetable%20or%20two%20and%20you've%20got%20a%20banquet!%20So%20not%20using%20dried%20black%20eyed%20peas..did%20it%20work?%20You%20bet.%20Did%20I%20enjoy%20it?%20Take%20a%20look%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20normally%20don't%20go%20in%20for%20frozen%20or%20canned%20stuff%20except%20in%20a%20pinch,%20but%20I'm%20really%20stoked%20about%20these%20frozen%20black%20eyed%20peas.%20Coming%20up%20next%20a%20trick%20with%20rhubarb%20and%20more%20gluten%20free%20Indian%20food.%20Follow%20along%20on%20Twitter%20@kathygori%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
