Ingredients

  • 1 c. Black whole gram beans
  • 2 Tbsp. Red kidney beans
  • 1 c. Minced onions
  • 2 Tbsp. Minced ginger
  • 3/4 c. Minced tomatoes
  • 1 c. Water
  • 1/2 tsp Grnd cardamom
  • 1 Tbsp. Grnd coriander
  • 1/2 tsp Red pepper
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 6 Tbsp. Ghee
  • 4 Tbsp. Ghee
  • 1 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 c. Chopped onions
  • 1/4 c. Coriander leaves, minced

Directions

  1. Wash the gram beans. Place both the grma beans & kidney beans in a large pot. Add in 4 c. of water & bring to a boil. Turn off heat & let sit for 2 hrs. Add in the onions, ginger, tomatoes, 1 c. water, cardamom, coriander, pepper, salt & 6 tb ghee. Mix well, bring to a boil & simmer for 4 1/2 to 5 hrs. Keep the heat very low so which you maintain a bare simmer during the cooking period.
  2. After cooking, remove 2 to 3 c. of the beans & blend them until smooth. Return to the pot. Keep the dal on a low simmer.
  3. Heat ghee & add in the cumin seeds when ghee is very warm. After 10 seconds, add in the chopped onion & cook gently for 10 min, stirring constantly. Pour over the dal & fold in the coriander. Simmer until heated through.
  4. Serve with Royal Vegetable & Rice Casserole.
