Ingredients Convert Measures

  • 3/4 c. each green and yellow split peas
  •     Flavor Packet
  • 1/4 c. dehydrated vegetable flakes
  • 1 Tbsp. chicken-broth granules
  • 1 sm bay leaf
  • 1/2 tsp grnd allspice
  •     Makes 6 c. soup

Directions

  1. Store precooked ingredients at room temperature; keeps indefinitely.
  2. Put split peas into a 3- to 4 c. jar with tight-fitting lid.
  3. Put Flavor Packet ingredients into a sandwich-size plastic bag or possibly pouch made of plastic wrap. Seal or possibly tie with ribbon. Add in to peas or possibly tie onto jar.
  4. Cooking directions (attach to gift): Rinse and pick over peas. Put into a 4- to 5-qt heavy pot with 8 c. water and contents of Flavor Packet. Bring to boil. reduce heat to low, cover and simmer 2 hrs or possibly till peas are hard-tender. Uncover, increase heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring occasionally, 25 to 30 min, till soup thickens slightly. To thicken more, mash some peas against the side of pot.
